Turkey Trotting Around Michigan

As we near the last month of the year, we swiftly approach two of the most anticipated holidays for most Americans. While time well spent with the family around the dining table this Thanksgiving, it’s often a little easy to put down a few hundred too many calories, which is kind of the entire tradition of the whole holiday at this point anyway. A few people will be trying to watch what they eat and spend Thanksgiving guilt free, but that’s hardly festive, which is why there are other ways to eat to your heart’s content while not being entirely overwhelmed with guilt.

The most festive and appropriate way to live your Thanksgiving at least a little guilt free are the annual Turkey Trots which happen in the days before and after Thanksgiving, most of them on the weekend after. Not only is a good 5k good for working off all that extra stuffing that you stuffed down, but many of these Turkey trots put proceeds to charities making them a win-win.

A couple really good sources for finding local Turkey Trots and other marathons are Running in the USA and Run Michigan. Both of these websites will help you find every race near you on your days off so you can get out there and plan out what races best suit you, they also have almost every single Turkey Trot in Michigan registered.

If you can make it to any Turkey Trots, then our top suggestions are the Toys for Tots Turkey Trot in Gaylord Michigan running this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday with a variety of different race distances with an adult ticket costing a meager $30. Another big Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is the Ann Arbor Turkey Trot which starts at 8:15 in the morning giving you plenty of time to work up an appetite on either the 1k or 5k before running off to your big dinner. A final big Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is the Traverse City Turkey Trot running either 5k or 5 miles with proceeds going to the Humane Society, TCAPS and and TART Trails.

For anyone who previously participated in the Petoskey Turkey Trot 5k, it is unfortunately discontinued as of this year.

But that’s no reason not to strap on your Running Hoodie and find the next nearest Turkey Trot with the above resources.

Michigan Pie Chain Sports 60 Different Pies And Serves Slices Out Across States

As 2016 approaches its final two months, there is a certain food that is standing out in its annual spotlight and that food is pie.

The Grand Traverse Pie Company is a little gem of the great lakes state that is fanatically focused on quality pies to serve out to all the hoodie wearing Michiganders all year round, but this time of year they really crank them out to keep up with demand that literally comes in from around the country.

The scene: Fall is in the air, Thanksgiving is just three weeks away, and Christmas is not far behind: that means pie is taking center stage on many festive menus.

Lots of restaurants and bakeries specialize in pie, but nobody takes it as far as the Grand Traverse Pie Company, a popular Midwestern chain built on 60 varieties of the stuff, with 15 locations across Michigan, as well as one in Terre Haute, Ind., west of Indianapolis.

With pies and other foods displayed behind glass cases, counter service, self-serve coffee, and seating in booths and at easily cleaned tables, Grand Traverse Pie Co. has the same slightly upscaled fast food atmosphere you’d find at bigger cafĂ©-style chains like Panera, Au Bon Pain and Corner Bakery. But unlike those, it is family owned and through both its menu, quality and many other subtle touches, really maintains a distinctive sense of feel, serving Michigan-centric food that goes way beyond just pie. Michigan Now Allowing Self Driving Cars On The Roads

The state of Michigan just passed legislation that will allow fully automatic vehicles on the roads of the street, that’s probably the coolest news we’ve heard this entire election cycle.

What this means is that Michigan’s already existing car manufacturing plants will have the opportunity to employ their concepts for fully automated cars to a market where they are legal, and not save the sweet future cars for 3d renderings and rare exceptions.

Any aspiring engineers should slip on a Detroit snapback and get to Michigan where this technology is booming.

More cars without human drivers could soon be on the road, pending the governor’s signature.

Self-driving cars are in Michigan’s future now that the state house of representatives has approved autonomous vehicle legislation.

Brandt Iden is on the House Communications and Technology Committee.

He says the safety of these vehicles provides opportunity for auto makers.

“As more companies realize the safety of these vehicles and having them on the road,” Iden says, “they’re obviously going to up production.”

Iden has been one of the key proponents of autonomous vehicle technology in Michigan. Continue Reading

All this fresh Michigan hype is certainly going to make a little state pride being worn around feel real good.

Millendo Therapeutics, Fontinalis Partners and RetroSense Therapeutics were the top honorees Wednesday at the Michigan Venture Capital Association’s 2016 Awards Dinner at the Rattlesnake Club in Detroit.

Ann Arbor-based Millendo Therapeutics works on finding drugs to improve the quality of life for patients with endocrine diseases. It won the Capital Event of the Year Award as the state’s largest health care deal in 2016 and largest venture capital financing round in the state.

Detroit-based Fontinalis took the 100 Award as it closed on a $100 million capital fund, the largest raised in the state this year. Michigan Releases Request For Information on Zero Emission Vehicle Projects

This news comes with a bit of mixed feelings. The state of Michigan has received a $14.7 billion dollar settlement from Volkswagen due to falsified emission test results on their 2015 diesel vehicles.

That being a whole lot of bad, the proud state of Michigan has set out to make the best out of a good situation and is requesting information on any existing projects for zero-emission vehicles so that the state can then invest the settlement funds into getting some real environment saving cars on the road.

We’re expecting clean air in the great lakes state as the state pushes for more and more clean air policies. There is no better time than now to slip into a great lakes sweatshirt and go for a walk and just smell the fresh air.

The State of Michigan issued a Request-for-Information (RFI) for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) projects on Monday, following the approval of a $14.7 billion Volkswagen settlement after the company falsified emissions tests for nearly half a million diesel vehicles in 2015.

$1.2 billion of the settlement funds have been set aside for investment in ZEV projects over the next ten years, with $300 million to be distributed to eligible projects every 30 months.

The RFI released by the State of Michigan, through the Michigan Agency for Energy (MAE), aims to gather information on eligible projects in order to submit a comprehensive proposal for ZEV Investment Plan funds. Continue Reading

Michigan Hunters and Trappers Called On For Black Bear Research

The wildlife regulators of Michigan have put out an open request for hunters and trappers to mark down the GPS coordinates of any black bear dens they find while out in the wilderness and report them to Mark Boerson who is studying the animals to design a management program.

mi-hunder-camo-beer-hoody

What better reason could you have to strap on a camo tailgate hoodie and head out to the woods?

Michigan wildlife regulators are asking hunters and trappers for help in locating black bear dens.

The Department of Natural Resources wants to find bears that could be fitted with radio collars and tested to provide information for a management program.

After locating a bear in a den, DNR scientists decide whether it’s a good candidate. If so, the animal is sedated and fitted with a collar and ear tags. A small tooth is removed to provide the bear’s age and a DNA sample.

The bear is then returned to the den to sleep through the winter. Continue Reading

Detroit Set To Become New Silicon Valley

More and more tech and engineering startups are moving to detroit, concentrating a new generation of innovators in the Michigan area, and it’s amazing it took this long for it to happen.

The average detroit home costs a fourth of what the average San Francisco house does, the state has old veterans of the auto industry, and several colleges pumping out worthy engineers every year. The fact is, Michigan is home to a great many minds waiting to be tapped, and many of them have no interest in moving out to the west coast.

mi-home-m-navy

So don a little bit of Michigan pride and invest in the growing future.

Southeast Michigan is starting to look like northern California, minus the redwood trees, the year-round good weather and the crazy expensive housing.

Automotive startups and tech giants have been beefing up their presence in the Detroit area in an attempt to attract engineering talent away from traditional automakers, because those engineers don’t want to move out West.

“We want to capture the talent that’s here that doesn’t want to go to California, possibly because a spouse is working or their children are in school, and they aren’t ready to make that transition,” said Helen Watson, human resources manager at Karma Automotive. Continue Reading

Sugar Loaf Resort Due For Makeover

As far as Skiing is concerned, Michigan is only second to New York for quantity of resorts and visitors dedicated to the sport. Sugar Loaf is an old location which held significant popularity until 2000 where it was shut down.

The good news is here though as a new investor is currently rebuilding the resort with the intent of having brand new doors open on the mountain within the next 4 years.

So get ready to slip into your fleece hoodies and get hyped for skiing with a sweet view of the great lakes.

Alan Fooy remembers when he was a single college student in the 1980s jamming ski gear with a friend into a VW Karmann Ghia with no heat and heading Up North to hit the slopes at the now-long-dormant Sugar Loaf ski resort near Traverse City.

“One of the reasons we stopped there was we were coming from southwest Michigan and we were too impatient to go all the way to Boyne,” Fooy, 53, now of Ferndale, recalled. “I loved the views — both from the car and on the hill. Now, I’d take my family back.”

He just might be able to, if Jeff Katofsky has his way. Continue Reading

7th Annual Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition

Coming up this Thursday, Detroit MI will be hosting the 7th Annual Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition where several dozen startup companies are competing against one another for $1 million in cash prizes as well as exposure to investors that will generate more money for the upstarts than any prizes.

With Detroit hosting such innovative competitions to foster in modern innovation, it seems like an excellent time to wear your Detroit sweatshirt while the city shows off why it’s now really earning the nickname of The Renaissance City.\
