What is There to Do in Michigan in the Fall?

It’s that time of the year again when we are graced with the presence of Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s the perfect drink for the perfect autumn in Michigan. The state is known for its short, hot summers and long, cold winters. So Michiganders always welcome the onset of fall. But Pumpkin Spice Latte isn’t the only thing that makes autumn wonderful in Michigan. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Michigan in the fall.

Apple Picking

Apples are abundant in Michigan. It is one of the leading growers of apples in the country, and one of the leading exporters of apples in the world. The sight of apples around Uncle John’s Cider Mill in St. John’s in Michigan is just unbelievable. You’ll never see that much apples in one place again. There are so many apples they made a game around it: Fruit Fling and Apple Cannon. Take the kids to the cider mill and they will have a smashing good time.

Cider Tasting

Cider tasting is another activity that can be considered typical Michigan. Go around the state and enjoy some apple ciders. One of the best mills to craft apple ciders is the Franklin Cider Mill in Bloomfield Hills. It has been making ciders since 1895. The mill grows 21 different varieties of apples.

Spicer Orchards in Fenton not only presses apples for ciders, it is also a farm market cum winery. It is owned by the Spicer family and has been passed down for five generations already. Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills is also popular, not just for tourists, but for locals as well, who rave non-stop about the cider and the dessert concoctions. It is also one of the oldest mills in all of Michigan.

Campfires

One of the most pleasing activities of autumn, especially in Michigan, is huddling together over a campfire, sharing stories or singing songs while toasting marshmallows. Wiards Orchards in Ypsilanti is a 200-acre property that provides all sorts of fun activities for kids and the whole family. It is an ideal site for bonfires, too.

In Newport, the J Webb Farm also caters to bonfires. The farm has a free bonfire during the fall. But if you want privacy, you can rent your own area where you can have your own campfire.

Haunted Houses

Now what is fall without haunted houses? There are hundreds of Haunted Houses all over Michigan. But for a heart attack-inducing scare, you might want to check out Erebus, which is in Pontiac. It’s considered one of the best and scariest haunted houses not just in Michigan but the entire country. The props and effects are meticulously made.

Other notable haunted houses around Michigan are Scarefest Scream Park in Lenox Township, Terrorfied Forest in Pinckney and Exit 13 Haunted House in Mount Morris.

Hayrides

And let’s not forget hayrides—a popular autumn activity to commemorate the fall harvests. Lie down on the hay and get the ride of your life around Corn Fun Corn Maze Adventure Park in Casco Township or Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village in Dearborn or the Harvest Moon Hayrides at Upland Hills Farm in Oxford.

With all these activities, don’t you just wish it’ll be autumn the whole year in Michigan? Get that blood pumping through the cool fall weather with a Pumpkin Spice Latte and your choice of entertainment in Michigan.

Whatever you choose to do in Michigan, you’re bound to have a great time. But make sure to stay warm out there – we recommend one of our Michigan D Sweatshirts to make your outing even more Michigan-y.

Halloween Is Around The Corner and Michigan Has Some Real Haunted Houses to See.

There is certainly an aesthetic appeal to some of the 100+ year old manors sitting around Michigan, especially at this time of year. There has been the usual surge of ghost hunting at this time, and the game is plentiful in Michigan which has several centuries old establishments which have housed phenomena that have baffled investigators who’d taken the time to set out all their ghost hunting gear and cameras.

While you’re out hunting for ghosts this weekend, consider slipping into something both warm, and handy like this tailgate hoodie that sports a pocket for your beer or other beverage of choice and enough warmth to keep you cozy for a full night’s hunting.

Patty Meyer didn’t believe in ghosts when she first came to the Felt mansion.

She describes the derelict estate near Saugatuck as “straight out of a Stephen King novel,” dark, foreboding, fenced in and overgrown with weeds. But something about the mansion’s architecture spoke to her. She and her husband, Dean, spearheaded an all-volunteer effort to rehabilitate it.

Over the past 15 years, the 1928 mansion near Lake Michigan and Saugatuck Dunes State Park has become a popular spot for weddings and other events.

And a popular spot for ghost hunters.

Dorr Felt built the mansion with money he made from inventing an early calculating machine called the Comptometer. But his wife, Agnes, died just six weeks after they moved in, and he died within a year and a half. In the 1950s, a caretaker died in the estate’s carriage house. Many believe that the spirit of Agnes Felt makes appearances from time to time. Continue Reading

A Stunning Peek Into a Perfect Michigan Autumn

Previously we talked about the rainy summer in Michigan delaying the autumn bloom of color in the tree leaves. Well for most of Michigan that bloom has finally hit, and the wait was well worth it. For those who have yet to have the season reach them, check out D3 Imagery who have provided 360 images of the season.

And while the weather is so inviting for nice cozy clothes and long walks through the leaves, check out this sweet cosmic fleece hoodie with a bit of Michigan pride.

It’s taking a while for the fall colors to come to southeast Michigan.

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them from the comfort of your desktop or mobile screen.

Michigan resident Dustin Dilworth, who runs D3 Imagery and provided this 360-degree look of the Mackinac Bridge Walk last month, has offered up another outstanding 360-degree view of a Michigan landmark: The Cut River Bridge in the Upper Peninsula, surrounded by the colorful fall trees.

Looking to get up north this fall to check out the fall foliage? The Tunnel of Trees recently won the honor of Michigan’s top fall color spot. Continue Reading

Lake Michigan Now Recording Highest Ever Water Temperature

Scientists have been surveying the surface temperatures of Lake Michigan since 1979 and this year they have noticed a record breaking high for the month of October.

While this is an alarming statistic showing the global impacts of climate change, on the bright side it is allowing the swimming season to be enjoyed later in the month of October.

With that bit of grim optimism, head out to Lake Michigan rocking this sweet Fresh Coast shirt

Two Lake Michigan buoys continue to give us a picture of much warmer than normal water temperatures.

A buoy in northern Lake Michigan and a buoy in southern Lake Michigan have thermometers that measure the surface water temperature.

If we take a five day average of surface water temperature at these buoys, Lake Michigan has never been warmer for this time of year. Consistent data goes back to 1979.

Here’s the graphic showing the five day average surface water temperature for the southern Lake Michigan buoy.

Notice the five day averages for October. The southern Lake Michigan buoy has an average temperature of 67° so far this October. If you scan left you will see the surface temperatures have never been warmer in October since records began in 1981. Continue Reading

With all this appreciation for natural renewable energy, you should show some pride as a Michigander.

As Michigan’s economy continues to grow and evolve, so does the energy industry. Michigan is transforming the way energy is produced to power homes, companies and more to make energy cleaner and greener.

Throughout the week of Oct. 17, Michigan will recognize Careers in Energy Week.

Gov. Snyder has officially declared Oct. 17 through Oct. 21 Careers in Energy Week. The statewide collaboration encourages Michiganders to pursue careers in the energy industry in an effort to provide access to affordable, reliable energy.

This week will promote the career opportunities in the clean energy industry to Michigan students, military, transitioning workers and women.

Michigan Mom’s Energy Conserving Message Goes Viral

A Clarkston Michigan mother decided to post a message for her three children on the thermostat:

thermostat-note

“Unless you answer YES to all of these… Do not turn on the heat!!!
Are you wearing a hoodie, pants, socks?

Is it November?

Do you pay the gas bill?”

She posted the image on her Facebook account and overnight over 33,000 people had seen her message. Which goes to show how people are feeling about the first bites of winter with night temperatures hitting a chilly 30 degrees. If you’re looking for a good performance pullover to bundle up this chilly fall, then look no further.

CLARKSTON, MI – A mother in Michigan who wanted to teach her children a valuable lesson about conserving energy never imagined her note would go viral.

Autumn Brandon is from Clarkston, Michigan. Michigan winters definitely get cold, and Brandon says it’s been chilly this week with temperatures dipping into the 30’s at night. But she just wasn’t ready for her family to turn on the heat.

She wanted to teach her kids the importance of conserving energy and emphasize that gas isn’t free, so on Monday, she posted a note on her thermostat that said:

Unless you answer YES to all of these… Do not turn on the heat!!!

Are you wearing a hoodie, pants, socks?

Is it November?

Do you pay the gas bill?

Brandon posted the photo to Facebook because she thought her friends would think it was funny. One of her friends shared the post, so she decided to make it public. Continue Reading

Michigan’s Autumn Colors Have Been Delayed, But The Display Will Be Worth The Wait

The late summer season had abnormally torrential rain, which might have ruined some camping trips, but it’s been good news for the trees.

This year the abnormal rainfall will be delaying the full display of autumn colors, but this delay will come with the bonus that the healthier trees will be bringing out a more dazzling display.

So expect the autumn show to be a week or two later than normal for your part of the state, and when you’re out on the bike paths rolling through the tumbling leaves, rock the season like it’s your style with this Michigan Cruiser Bike shirt.

Fall color enthusiasts will have to wait a week or two longer for West Michigan’s chromatic show.

Storm Team 8 says this year’s fall colors are running one to two weeks behind schedule. The best colors will likely be inland, across the western Upper Peninsula. A recent satellite image shows yellow and orange foliage north of Sault Ste. Marie and across a large swath of northern Wisconsin and the U.P.

Dry Michigan summers usually lead to a short fall color display, but the unusually rainy August likely put local trees back on track for a good display. Continue Reading

Michigan Farmer and Part Time Teacher Discovers Nearly Complete Mastodon

It’s been an exciting week for Michigan paleontologists with a local grown farmer and part-time teacher was on a hike when he discovered a mastodon bone belonging to an 11,000 years dead local. Within hours there were volunteers from all walks of life who were quick to dig through mud and soil for one of the best mastodon skeletons that has ever been found.

camp-life-hoodie

So whether you’re out hiking or hunting in the great state of Michigan, wear a little pride and a little swag for the state with this Camp Life Hoodie.

Seth Colling’s keen eye brought a crowd of researchers, teachers, grad students, volunteers and TV cameras to the banks of an unnamed creek near Mayville in Michigan’s Thumb on Saturday.

“My whole life, I’ve looked at the ground and I’ve picked up interesting stuff,” said Colling, a farmer and part-time teacher at the Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning, a year-round camp for children and adults with special needs.

In 2014, Colling picked up a mastodon bone in the creek. On Saturday, University of Michigan paleontologists and grad students, along with teachers from Thumb-area schools, were unearthing more of the male mastodon that about 11,000 years ago met an untimely end — perhaps with the assistance of Ice Age humans. Happiness, Love & Loss

We spend a lot of time having fun here at Livnfresh, and a lot of that is by talking with our great customers. We love the stories we hear about you all going on journeys, hanging with friends, exploring the woods and relaxing by the lake and it’s all of you who motivate us to come to work every day. Still, we received a message the other day that made us both glad to be around but sad for the news. Margaret Evans sent us this message:

“I just want to tell you your page makes me happy. My best friend just passed away and it was unexpected and sudden. With that being said and all the sadness that goes with it her favorite place in the world was to go up north. So every time I see one of your posts show up on my page I think of her and all the happy times we’ve had together. Just thought I would share one way your page makes someone happy. ”

So we wanted to let Margaret know that she’s in our hearts and to send love from Michigan with some beautiful photography from here on the Fresh Coast:
